Picture ThisAshley Tisdale Goes Back To High School In 'Picture This,' On DVD July 22
July 5, 2008

The fashions, trends, and slang may change, but few experiences are as timeless and universal as the social rollercoaster of being a teenager! High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale headlines her very first feature-length film in the highly anticipated DVD premiere of Picture This, making its debut July 22 from MGM Home Entertainment.

"When I read the script for Picture This, I just fell in love with the lead character Mandy, this goofy, unpopular, girl next door who knows what she wants, but isn't willing to sacrifice who she is to get it," said Tisdale. "Mandy's real and I think a lot of kids will relate to that. It reminds me a lot of when I was in high school. I wasn't really in the popular group, but I wasn't in the nerdy group. I was somewhere in the middle, too."

Executive Produced by Tisdale's "Blondie Girl" Films and directed by Stephen Herek (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead), Picture This features Tisdale as Mandy Gilbert, an unpopular high school senior who lands a date to the biggest party of the year with Drew (Robbie Amell; Cheaper by the Dozen 2, American Pie Presents: Beta House), the school's hottest guy. Only problem… she's grounded! With the help of her friends and her new, must-have video phone, she'll have to outsmart her overprotective dad and Drew's ex-girlfriend, in a crazy, adventure-filled day that proves popularity can come and go, but good friends will always be in the picture!

Featuring a rockin' musical performance by Tisdale to the hit 80's single "Shadows Of The Night" and laugh-out-loud performances from Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects, A Few Good Men), Lauren Collins ("Degrassi: The Next Generation," Charlie Bartlett), Shenae Grimes ("Degrassi: The Next Generation") and Cindy Busby ("Heartland"), Picture This is presented widescreen format and is loaded with extras including two featurettes, scene-specific cell phone text commentary, behind-the-scenes footage and an exclusive trivia game.

Sharon StonePETA Offers Sharon Stone A Brain Scan
July 5, 2008

Bosses at animal rights group People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are offering Sharon Stone a free brain scan - in an effort to improve her compassion. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk has written to the movie star, suggesting her refusal to stop wearing fur and recent ill-advised comments she made about the Chinese earthquake could be symptoms of an underdeveloped brain.

Acknowledging Stone is an intelligent woman, PETA bosses fear the actress may need to work on her compassionate nature. And, after she was forced to apologize to China for suggesting the country's recent earthquake tragedy was "karma" for the way the nation treat Tibetans, PETA chiefs feel Stone might be ready to undergo medical tests.

In her letter, Newkirk writes, "Given that millions of people... were killed, injured, and left homeless by the recent earthquake in China, everyone was shocked to hear you dismiss the devastating effects of this disaster. However, your cavalier attitude did not come as a surprise to us. We are used to the indifference that you flaunt and the callous remarks that you make about the suffering and death of the animals whose fur you wear so often. Scientific studies suggest that the pre-frontal regions of the brains of people who lack empathy might be underdeveloped. Here's our offer: Would you allow PETA to pay for a scan of the pre-frontal region of your brain to determine if comments and actions that seem to demonstrate a lack of empathy are the result of a physical defect?"

The star suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2001 but has since fought her way back to health.

Heath LedgerHeath Ledger Never Saw 'The Dark Knight'
July 5, 2008

Heath Ledger never saw his final film before he died in January. The Dark Knight director Chris Nolan had screened the first trailer for the late actor, but he was still editing the upcoming blockbuster when Ledger died.

Nolan says, "He was already on another film. It was months and months since we'd wrapped. We had really cut a lot of the film together and watched the film a couple of times and were about halfway through the edit process. Unfortunately he'd only seen the prologue, the introduction to his character shot with these IMAX cameras and put out as a short film in IMAX for Christmas.

"We screened it for him and he enjoyed it very much. It gave him a taste of how it was going to come across but I was never able to show him his finished performance and that's very sad."

Ledger is already receiving rave reviews for his portrayal of The Joker, with many critics suggesting the Aussie is a clear front runner for an Oscar.

Hans ZimmerHans Zimmer Considered Scrapping 'Batman' Score After Ledger's Death
July 5, 2008

Revered movie composer Hans Zimmer was so devastated about the death of pal Heath Ledger he considered scrapping his score for the new Batman film and starting all over again.

Zimmer feared the music for scenes featuring Ledger's The Joker character was too dark and menacing - and was worried it wasn't respectful enough.

The award-winning composer tells Parade.com, "I, for a moment, was thinking, 'Oh my God, I should throw out all the music I've written for The Joker and just start over again,' which is just exactly the wrong thing to do. To honor his (Ledger) performance, I had to stick to my guns. The music has to portray the philosophy of anarchy that The Joker displays in the face of Batman's valor.

"I couldn't soften the music or compromise the evil he projects because Heath really did give such a tremendous performance. If I had taken my eye off the ball, if I had been sentimental, if I had done anything like that, it would really have not served him."

Sigourney WeaverSigourney Weaver Recalls Wild Gorilla Attack
July 4, 2008

Gorillas In The Mist star Sigourney Weaver was awestruck when she was offered membership into an 'exclusive club' after a trip to Africa - because the only requirement was to have survived an attack by a wild gorilla.

Weaver was shooting a documentary about the horrors of gorilla poaching in 1988 when she was charged by an ape - and lived to tell the tale.

She later discovered only a few people had escaped a gorilla attack.

Still haunted by her life-threatening experience, Weaver tells Hollywood Minute, "I was charged by a silverback (gorilla)-- he was in a bad mood. We should've known that. Usually he didn't pay any attention to me. He was about 450 pounds. And all of a sudden he got up, he beat his chest, he came roaring right up the hill toward me... and he knocked me down.

"I crawled away through the brush and ran into someone from the research center who said, `You've just joined a very exclusive club. You've just been hit by a silverback gorilla.'"

Mamma MiaABBA Hits Sung By Hollywood Cast Of 'Mamma Mia'
July 4, 2008

Meryl Streep leads an all-star cast in the feature-film adaptation of the beloved musical that has been seen by more than 30 million people in 170 cities and eight languages around the world. Bringing the timeless lyrics and melodies of iconic super group ABBA to movie audiences, summer 2008 is the season for Mamma Mia! The star-studded soundtrack is the ultimate souvenir to the movie, set for release on Decca July 8.

The feature film adaptation of the global stage hit production brings the magic of ABBA's music to the silver screen. With rising star Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper, alongside Hollywood heavy-hitters Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skasgârd, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski, the film features the stars' versions of 17 ABBA classics in this celebration of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads.

Mixed, mastered and produced by ABBA's musical geniuses Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the soundtrack is a must-have collection of these pop gems. Andersson and Ulvaeus reunited in Stockholm with the musicians who played on the original ABBA songs to record the disc in February 2007. It was the first time the musicians had played the songs together since ABBA toured more than 25 years ago. Along with producing the recording, Andersson also played keyboards. He commented, "We didn't have to think about it - it was in the fingers."

The actors joined together for the first time to record their vocals in London in April, 2007, prior to the commencement of principal photography, and continued recording later that summer on location while filming on the beautiful Greek islands. Whether it's Streep, Walters and Baranski making their mark on "Dancing Queen," Brosnan and Streep's upbeat rendition of "SOS," or the energetic song-and-dance numbers such as "Voulez-Vous," the Mamma Mia! soundtrack captures the essence of the originals, while still giving them new and dazzling treatments.

Inspired by the storytelling arcs of ABBA's songs from "Dancing Queen" to "Money, Money, Money" and "Take a Chance on Me," Mamma Mia! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

Tracklisting as follows:
1. Honey, Honey (Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Lilley & Rachel McDowall)
2. Money, Money, Money (Meryl Streep, Julie Walters & Christine Baranski)

Mamma Mia

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited daughter she's raised alone. For Sophie's wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski)—from her one-time backing band, Donna & the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.

On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna's past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Will SmithWill Smith Annoyed At Second Oscar Snub
July 3, 2008

Will Smith was disappointed he missed out on an Oscar for his role in The Pursuit Of Happyness - because he was convinced it was "my time".

The star has received two Best Actor Academy Award nominations to date - for Ali in 2001, and again for the 2006 drama. He was beaten to the podium in 2002 by Denzel Washington - for his role in the critically-acclaimed Training Day - and he and lost out to Forest Whitaker's Last King of Scotland portrayal at the 2007 Academy Awards. But Smith admits it was Whitaker's win that upset him the most.

He tells Hollywood Minute, "Denzel took it for Training Day; fantastic film. When you can get nominated and invited to the (Oscars) party, it's huge. (But) I can always tell when things aren't right for me at the time; I didn't feel like that was the time. But, for Pursuit of Happyness, I actually felt like it was my time and I still didn't win it! I was like, 'Hey, it's my time! Wait; hold on, that other boy's taken my thing!'"

Rainn WilsonRainn Wilson Slams 'Girly' Rockers
July 3, 2008

Actor Rainn Wilson has blasted legendary rockers Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin for wearing make-up and women's clothes - branding them too girly.

The Office star portrays a washed-up drummer given a second chance at stardom in new movie The Rocker, and is a huge fan of the heavy rock genre. However, Wilson dropped his loyalty to his beloved groups after the band members adopted effeminate styles.

The actor tells Hollywood Minute, "I grew up listening to a lot of classic rock. I loved AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, but as soon as it started to get girly, as soon as they were wearing women's blouses, mascara and eyeliner - guy-liner I call it - as soon as it went there then it kind of lost me."

Friends'Friends' Movie On The Way?
July 3, 2008

Actresses Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox are reportedly enthusiastic to turn hit TV show Friends into a movie after witnessing the box office draw of Sex And The City: The Movie. Friends came to an end in 2004 after a 10-year run.

Rumors of a reunion have repeatedly been denied by former cast members Cox, Aniston, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow. But now it appears the stars may be ready to return to Central Perk to cash in on the sitcom's popularity following the success of Sex and the City, which was turned from a TV series into a big-screen film earlier this year.

A source says, "Jennifer, Courteney and the rest of the cast are keen to reprise their roles, under the right circumstances. The box office success of Sex and the City has really got their wheels spinning about how a Friends film could be just as big, if done right. Jennifer says she and Courteney have already talked this summer about what they want out of a Friends movie."

The news comes just one month after it was revealed Cox's controversial TV drama Dirt was cancelled by network bosses at FX after just two seasons. Sex and the City: The Movie, which stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall, has grossed more than $300 million to date worldwide since its release in May.

She was also due to star in two of Rodriguez's other projects - Red Sonja and Woman in Chains! - when reports of the break-up emerged. However the actress' representative has denied the pair has ended their working relationship, telling People.com, "The production of all three films is moving forward with Rose to star."

And a source close to McGowan insists the 34-year-old beauty is still with the filmmaker: "She and Robert are fine."

Las VegasStars Bring Poker Faces To Sin City For Charity
July 3, 2008

Celebrities turned out Wednesday to donate to Darfur charities — and to show their fellow stars just who the real card sharks were.

"I'm looking forward to whipping a lot of celebrity rear end," talk show host Montel Williams said before beginning play in a charity Texas Hold 'em tournament at the World Series of Poker. "I tweaked my game, and my game is really solid."

Williams and 87 others, including such Hollywood heavy hitters as Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jason Alexander, George Lopez, Adam Sandler and Ray Romano, played in the no-limit tournament to raise money and have a good time.

Charles Barkley also played after a recent pledge to take a hiatus from gambling. The 45-year-old former NBA star, who was sued in May by the Wynn casino for failing to pay back gambling loans, said he would donate his winnings to charity and didn't plan to spend a lot of extra time in town.

The TNT commentator paid back his markers shortly after the casino filed a civil complaint. Barkley said he wasn't going to gamble for "the next year or two" on the air during the NBA playoffs.

"I can't gamble, so I gotta drink," Barkley joked with Phil Hellmuth after the 11-time bracelet winner invited Barkley for a cocktail after the tournament. "Can you imagine how bad life would be if you couldn't gamble or drink?"

Players donated prize money from the second annual "Ante Up for Africa" event to charities working in the Darfur region of Sudan. Cheadle and poker pro Annie Duke began the event last year to raise money and awareness for the region, where more than 300,000 people have died and 2.5 million have been displaced since ethnic warfare began in 2003, according to the U.S. presidential envoy to Sudan.

The tournament benefited two charities — ENOUGH, a project co-founded in 2007 by the International Crisis Group and the Center for American Progress and Not On Our Watch, a group co-founded by Cheadle, Damon, George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

"It's just great to see everybody," Cheadle said as the event began. "Don't expect to win, because it's mine."

Cheadle was eliminated by Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell when his pair of jacks couldn't top Cantrell's queens.

Players in the poker tournament paid $5,000 to enter, and were asked to donate at least half their winnings evenly to the two charities. Nevada law prohibits poker tournaments from designating a certain amount of prize money for charity so players signed voluntary contracts at the tables, pledging at least half their winnings.

"Charity doesn't have to be boring, it doesn't have to be a burden," Duke said. "We want people to have a really good time."

As play began, the prize pool totaled $418,000. Last year the event raised more than $500,000 for the charities and finished with the top two players pooling their $350,000 in winnings and donating it to the cause.

Alexander won the first hand at his table with Damon, eight-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner Erik Seidel and others when he raised before the flop and everyone else folded.

"All the tournaments I've ever won have been for charity," Alexander said. "When there's no actual money for me, I'm very good."

Wesley SnipesJudge: Snipes Can Travel Abroad For Movies
July 3, 2008

Wesley Snipes will be allowed to leave the United States to work on two movies while his lawyers appeal his tax convictions.

Federal judge William Terrell Hodges on Wednesday approved the actor's motion to travel to London and Bangkok, Thailand. Snipes will be in England about three days this month for post-production editing of "Gallowwalker," and in Thailand for eight weeks to film "Chasing the Dragon."

A jury convicted the action star in February of three counts of willfully failing to file his income taxes. The 45-year-old Snipes, star of the "Blade" trilogy, "White Men Can't Jump" and "Jungle Fever" among other films, has appealed the convictions and his three-year prison sentence to the 11th Circuit Court in Atlanta.

Prosecutors asked Hodges to deny Snipes' request to travel abroad, saying he was a flight risk.

VampiresVampires: Why The Obsession?
July 3, 2008

All around us are stories of the paranormal and fairytale worlds. Recent big-screen films have focused on hidden doorways to far off places (Chronicles of Narnia), talented wizards (Harry Potter) and even a crafty kid with an animal spirit sidekick (The Golden Compass). We've been inundated with ghosts, goblins and, yes, vampires.

The recent cancellation of "Moonlight" caused outrage in fanboys and fangirls everywhere. Thousands of viewers signed petitions urging CBS to change its mind. Rumors circulated that another network may pick up the show for a second season, but that didn't happen. "Moonlight" bit the dust for good.

But as one series ends, another rises in its place. Alan Ball's upcoming series "True Blood" will air next season on HBO. Based on Charlaine Harris' "Southern Vampire" novels, "True Blood" is set in a small town in Louisiana. It's a humorous and horrific look at vampires and humans who are somehow able to coexist. The protagonist is a human named Sookie Stackhouse (played by Anna Paquin) who winds up falling for a vampire named Bill (Stephen Moyer).

Vampires

So what's the cause of our vampire obsession? Take a bite out of this!

A Reality Beyond Our World

People are drawn to vampires simply because they aren't human. Vampires present a world that is so unlike our own sense of reality. In our confines we deal with the every day monotony of work, school and family. However, in author Stephanie Meyer's "Twilight" series, Forks, Washington has become a place where readers long to escape to. After reading the first book, many may clutch it to their heart wishing they could be a part of the storyline. Some have even been known to walk around chanting "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob," only wishing these characters could come to life. Others will eventually travel to Forks, stand still with the wind blowing in their hair and close their eyes, envisioning the location as belonging to Bella and Edward, when in reality it's all just a figment of one writer's imagination. "Twilight" is heading to the big screen this December.

Sex Appeal

Maybe we are attracted to vampires based purely on their exotic appearance. Many are described as having pale, milky white skin with dark eyes the color of an onyx stone. Some may have dark hair or red hair, blonde hair or no hair. A few will sport human clothes and participate in human activities, while others don cloaks and sharp fangs. Fans watched "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" not only for the drama but because the actors were nothing short of gorgeous. It's the irony that such a monster who may be coldhearted or evil on the inside (not all though!) can be so beautiful and appealing on the outside.

Vampires

Conflict of Struggle: Who Will Win?

Who doesn't like to witness a conflict complete with twists and turns? Isn't drama and conflict the sole reason we go to see action movies, play videogames and engulf ourselves in imaginary worlds? We believe our main characters will fight to their deaths, but ultimately believe they will survive. But what if they don't? What will happen next? Is it really true that a main character cannot be killed off? In an episode of "Charmed," one of the main witches was killed, and it still managed to be a hit show. When it comes to our favorite fantasy worlds, we are looking for drama, excitement and passion. Despite an obvious outcome, there will always contain that hint of doubt. The 'what-if' element is what makes our outside dreams come to life.

Vampires

Fun

Of course there's always the idea that believing in these characters is just plain fun. It doesn't cost money, risk our lives or even feel like work. By simply turning on the TV or cracking open a book, we lose ourselves in a world unlike our own void of our common problems and enter one so inviting. In essence, it's our escape from a lifestyle common to many but yet so unique we ache for it to be ours. Fans around the world have most likely longed for Buffy's fighting skills, dreamed of having a boyfriend like Edward Cullen or a friendship like Angel's.

Angelina JolieTwin Pregnancies - Like Angelina Jolie's - Are Complicated, Doctors Say
July 2, 2008

A horde of paparazzi are the least of Angelina Jolie's worries these days. It's not easy giving birth to twins.

The actress has checked into a French Riviera hospital in Nice, France, to be kept under doctors' watch and rest before she gives birth. Doctors say that's not a bad strategy.

"The risk of nearly everything you can think of in pregnancy is increased with twins," said Dr. Virginia Beckett, an obstetrician-gynecologist and spokeswoman for Britain's Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Mothers pregnant with twins have higher chances of miscarriage, stillbirth, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Beckett characterized women expecting twins as "a particularly worrying group of patients."

Twins are also more likely than single-born babies to have chromosomal or genetic abnormalities, since early diagnosis of these problems is difficult.

While there is little that can be done to change your genetics, women pregnant with twins cope with the physical strain on their bodies better if they are healthy and fit.

Angelina Jolie"I assume Angelina doesn't have a problem with that," Beckett said.

More than half of all twins are born early, which may explain Jolie's appearance at the Lenval Hospital in southern France. Jolie has previously said the twins were due in August.

At a press conference Wednesday at the hospital, Jolie's doctor said the actress would give birth "in the weeks to come." Dr. Michel Sussmann said the 33-year-old actress was doing fine but had checked in to be kept under observation.

Doctors aren't entirely sure whether a natural delivery or a Caesarean section is better for twins; an international twin birth study is still ongoing to investigate that question.

In a natural delivery, monitoring the twins externally is hard. Labor is generally straightforward until the second twin arrives.

Once the first twin is out, there is more room for the second twin to maneuver. That extra room may be problematic since it could allow the second twin to get into difficult positions, including a breech birth.

Doctors might recommend a Caesarean section if a woman has high blood pressure, if there is a risk of delivering early, or if previous deliveries have had complications.

Women are also more likely to have a Caesarean section if they have had one previously. Jolie's youngest daughter, Shiloh, was delivered by Caesarean section.

Jolie's arrival at the hospital ahead of her delivery date could mean she has some health problems doctors want to monitor.

Her doctors might be monitoring her for pre-eclampsia, experts suggested. The condition causes high blood pressure and an abnormal amount of protein in the urine. It can result in complications including seizures, a stroke, or severe bleeding.

"This is the main one to watch because it's much more common in twin pregnancies," said Dr. Steven Goldstein, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York University School of Medicine.

Goldstein said pregnant women would not normally be admitted into hospitals before delivery unless there was a medical concern.

"If everything's perfect, then you would not want to deliver early," Goldstein said. "It's best to carry the twins to term if you can."

Still, Beckett said Jolie might be perfectly healthy, and said that some women chose to check into medical facilities even with no impending problems.

"Maybe Angelina just needs a break from everything," she suggested.

Michael LohanMom Of Alleged Lohan Sister 'Wanted It Exposed'
July 2, 2008

The father of a 13-year-old girl who may be Lindsay Lohan's half-sister said the family went public with the story after Lohan's father, Michael, repeatedly refused to provide support.

The Montana girl's family is looking into legal options to pursue once they establish that Michael Lohan is the father, Daryl Kaufmann said in a phone interview. He said his wife, Kristi Kaufmann, had been trying to get Michael Lohan to support their daughter for years. "She had enough," Kaufmann said of his wife when reached by telephone at their home in Florence, Mont. "She just wanted it exposed. So he's going to end up having to do something."

Michael Lohan told reporters Friday he learned of Kristi Kaufmann's claim after receiving letters and photos from her while incarcerated on drunk driving charges. Lohan acknowledged having a sexual relationship with Kaufmann while he was separated from wife Dina Lohan 13 years ago. "Why would someone without taking a test put something out there like this?" Lohan said. "What if it's negative? What is that going to do to her own child and my children? Is this for the fame? There was correspondence where she said Ashley, her daughter, wants to be an actress, and she's so talented."

OK! Magazine first reported Kaufmann's claim Friday. Daryl Kaufmann said his wife called and e-mailed several magazines in an attempt to expose Lohan as the father of her daughter. Kaufmann said OK! was the only publication to respond to her messages and did not pay for the story or photos of Ashley. "She used OK! Magazine to get the ball rolling," he said.

Michael Lohan acknowledged on Friday there was a resemblance in the photos of Ashley to his daughters. He said he recently received a "senseless, ridiculous voicemail" from Kristi Kaufmann, whose maiden name is Horn. He said he has taken a paternity test and will take responsibility for the child if he is proved to be the biological father. It was not clear when the results would come back. Lindsay Lohan's publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnick, did not return messages left by the AP. Michael Lohan's publicist, Leslie Kellner Taylor, did not return messages seeking additional comment.

Michael Lohan, a former Wall Street broker, settled a long-simmering divorce with Dina Lohan last August, though they returned to court in Long Island last month over custody issues. The pair married in 1985. He was released from prison in March 2007 after serving nearly two years for attempted assault and driving while intoxicated.

Michael Lohan said he hasn't spoken with Lindsay or any of his other three children - Cody, 12; Ali, 14; Michael, 20 - about Kaufmann's claim. Ali and Cody currently live with their mother in Merrick, N.Y., and are featured on the E! reality show "Living Lohan." Lindsay Lohan is currently filming a movie titled "Labor Pains."

July 2, 2008

Actress Charlize Theron has shot down suggestions that a movie is to be made about her life.

The South African-born actress experienced a traumatic childhood, watching her mother shoot dead her abusive father when she was just five-years-old. Theron moved to America as a teenager and was discovered by a movie talent scout at 18 after she threw a tantrum in a bank.

Fourteen years on, she has two Oscar nominations and one Best Actress win, and is one of the biggest earning stars in Hollywood. But the actress is determined her story will never make it to the big screen.

She tells Hollywood Minute, "God, I hope not. I've been working harder than anything in my life to try and keep my life sacred. Angelina Jolie's doctor says her twins may take a few more weeks to arrive.

Dr. Michael Sussmann says the 33-year-old actress, who is in a hospital on the French Riviera, is doing fine. Asked when Jolie is expected to have her twins, Sussmann replied, "I can't give you a date. Let's say the birth will happen in the weeks to come."

Sussmann says Jolie checked into the hospital for observation, not because of any medical emergency. The ten-episode series will follow Garrett on blind dates with 10 lucky ladies, chosen from applicants who submit their own original videos online for a chance to make a love connection and be part of the show. Beginning June 12, women can upload their video applications at Crackle.com, where a panel of Garrett "experts," including his ex-wife and urologist, among others, will review the submissions and decide which applicants will spend a night on the town with the comedian.

"An online dating show seemed like a logical choice given that I'm in the midst of a mid-life crisis, and adverse to pain, which makes getting my ear pierced out of the question," said Garrett. "And since I'm not picky about my choices, I hope women of all sizes, shapes and colors will be compelled to submit their videos."

The series will premiere this fall on Crackle.com, YouTube, AOL Video, Hulu, Verizon Wireless' V CAST Video service, AT&T Wireless, and direct to Sony BRAVIA TVs via BRAVIA Internet Video Link.

The Wackness'The Wackness' Has A Solid Screenplay, Excellent Performances
July 2, 2008

Doesn't it seem, at times, that the year 2000 is still in the future? This mostly seems the case when the word "year" appears before "2000;" regardless, I had to do a double take when I first learned that we now live in an era that is producing 1990's era period pieces.

"The Wackness" takes place in New York City circa summer 1994. It's an interesting time for New York that saw the beginning of the Giuliani era and the end of, for better or worse, any tolerance whatsoever for crime.

The recent crackdown on crime is a problem for high school senior and social outcast Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) who finances himself through the sale of marijuana out of an ices cart. Luke does not know how to meet members of the opposite sex so he enlists the help of psychiatrist, and fellow marijuana fan, Dr. Jeffrey Squires (a wonderful Ben Kingsley, who can now have his Oscar back after it was revoked for his appearance in "The Love Guru") for advice. Trading drugs for sessions, Luke explores the inner demons of his social awkwardness in contrast to his home life that is falling apart due to unwise investments by his father.

The Wackness

It does not take long for Luke to realize that Squires, who is trapped in a loveless marriage to a much younger wife (an under utilized Famke Janssen), is even more messed up than he is. An unlikely friendship between the two soon forms, resulting in a barrage of nights out at Squires' favorite dive bars - Squires is dumbfounded to later learn the legal drinking age is not 18 - and later indulging in an endless supply of drugs.

The friendship is tested when Luke starts spending much of his free time with fellow classmate and - as Luke described, "out of his league" girl - Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby from "Juno"). What complicates this relationship is the fact Stephanie is Squires' stepdaughter. Squires objects to the relationship, not because of parental instincts but because he has seen Stephanie discard many a suitor once she becomes, as he puts it, "bored." Luke spends the summer of 1994 balancing his relationship with Stephanie with his entrepreneurial drug dealing business, which Squires eventually joins, that has been expanded in order to try and pay off the debts of his parents and avoid being evicted from their Upper East Side apartment.

"The Wackness" works because of the solid screenplay (written by director Jonathan Levine) and the excellent performances by the movie's leads. The fact the film takes place in 1994 seems to have little influence on the actual story. True, the story plays against the backdrop of a city focused on eliminating crime, but the repercussions of some of the characters actions would be no different in today's New York. Also, like many recent films that explore other, yet relatively recent, eras "The Wackness" has a tendency to fall into the trap of inserting pop culture references just for the sake of including a pop culture reference. I am not even sure they are all correct; Luke is seen playing "The Legend of Zelda" on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, a game that was released in 1987. (By 1994 the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis were the gaming systems of that era.)

Minor complaints aside, "The Wackness" offers a unique story coupled by top-notch acting, telling the story of two flawed characters only separated by four decades of life. Perhaps in the future both of them will eventually find what they are looking for, perhaps as far into the future as...the year 2000.

Heath LedgerLedger's Batman Villain Has Oscar Shot
July 2, 2008

Jack Nicholson's Joker was a blast. Heath Ledger's Joker is as dark and anarchic a figure as Randle McMurphy in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," the role that brought Nicholson his first Academy Award.

Ledger's performance in the Batman tale "The Dark Knight" is so remarkable that next Jan. 22, the one-year anniversary of his death, he could become just the seventh actor in Oscar history to earn a posthumous nomination.

"I do think that Heath has created an iconic villain that will stand for the ages, and of course, I would love to see him get an award," said Christian Bale, who reprises his "Batman Begins" role as the tormented crime fighter. "But you know, to me, you can witness his talent, celebrate his talent within this movie. Anything else is gravy."

Superhero flicks usually are not the stuff Oscar dreams are made of. Yet Ledger delivered so far beyond anyone's expectations that he could end up as the second performer to win Hollywood's top honor after his death.

"He may be the first actor since Peter Finch. He may even win the damn thing," said Gary Oldman, who co-stars as noble cop Jim Gordon in "The Dark Knight," which hits theaters July 18.

Finch is the only person to win posthumously, earning the best-actor prize for 1976's "Network" two months after he died.

The Dark Knight

News of Ledger's death at age 28 from an accidental drug overdose broke just hours after the Oscar nominations were announced last January, darkening what normally is one of Hollywood's happiest days. The nominations next year fall on the same date because they were moved back two days from their traditional Tuesday announcement to avoid conflicting with the presidential inauguration.

With nothing remotely like the maniacal Joker among his credits beforehand, Ledger had been a surprising choice to fans, some feeling he was too young, others sensing he would not live up to the campy but earnest performance Nicholson gave in 1989's "Batman." (The role earned Nicholson a Golden Globe nomination, though he did not make the Oscar cut.)

As filming progressed last year, word began leaking from the set about the feverishly psychotic persona Ledger was creating.

With a marketing campaign heavily focused on the Joker, the movie trailers that followed presented a Joker with sloppy, ominous clown makeup that looked as though it had been applied in a windstorm. The brief footage revealed a character whose cackling humor cannot conceal the malevolent soul beneath.

"Whatever Heath channeled into, he's found something quite extraordinary," Oldman said. "It's arguably one of the greatest screen villains I think I've ever seen."

Fans were hooked, but some were skeptical when Oscar buzz for the performance started circulating after Ledger's death. Comic-book tales and other big action flicks rarely are taken seriously by awards voters, who are willing to honor them for technical achievements but generally not for acting.

Skepticism dissolved once Warner Bros. began screenings for "The Dark Knight."

"Heath Ledger didn't so much give a performance as he disappeared completely into the role," filmmaker and lifelong comics fan Kevin Smith said on his MySpace blog after seeing "The Dark Knight." ''I know I'm not the first to suggest this, but he'll likely get at least an Oscar nod (if not the win) for best supporting actor."

Ledger's performance is surpassing even the sky-high expectations hardcore fans have going in.

"He was better than I thought he was going to be," said Bill Ramey, founder of the fan Web site Batman-on-Film.com, who caught an advance press screening. "I think he legitimately would deserve an Oscar nomination, not just out of sympathy to his passing, but because he was just fantastic in the movie. ... It's right up there with Hannibal Lecter," which earned Anthony Hopkins an Oscar for "The Silence of the Lambs."

Along with Finch, past posthumous Oscar contenders include James Dean, who was nominated for best actor twice after his death, with 1955's "East of Eden" and 1956's "Giant."

The other actors nominated after their deaths were Spencer Tracy (1967's "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"); Ralph Richardson (1984's "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes"); Massimo Troisi (1995's "The Postman"); and Jeanne Eagels (1929's "The Letter").

The aura surrounding Ledger since his death is a sign that, like Dean, he could endure as a mythic figure of talent silenced before his time. Ledger had a best-actor nomination for 2005's "Brokeback Mountain" and was considered a gifted performer just coming into his own.

That will not necessarily improve his Oscar chances. Dean had two shots after his death and lost both.

"The fact that only one actor has ever won an Oscar from the grave tells us that in general at the Oscars, the feeling is when you're dead, you're dead," said Tom O'Neil, a columnist for TheEnvelope.com, an awards Web site. "Maybe the point is that the Oscars are all about hugs. Nobody wants to hug a dead guy."

Oscar voters tend to hand out the trophies for heroic or sympathetic roles, so Ledger's supremely evil characterization could prove a drawback along with the action-genre stigma.

Yet there are notable instances when actors playing villains made such an impression that academy members could not resist voting for them.

Besides Hopkins as cannibalistic killer Lecter, bad guys who won include Fredric March in the title role of 1932's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"; F. Murray Abraham as Mozart's mortal enemy in 1984's "Amadeus"; Kathy Bates as a novelist's demented fan in 1990's "Misery"; Denzel Washington as a corrupt cop in 2001's "Training Day"; and Charlize Theron as a serial killer in 2003's "Monster."

The last two years have brought Oscar wins by Forest Whitaker as brutal dictator Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland," Tilda Swinton as a murderously ruthless attorney in "Michael Clayton," Daniel Day-Lewis as a savage oilman in "There Will Be Blood" and Javier Bardem as a psychopathic killer in "No Country for Old Men."

"When a performance as a villain is that memorable, it can be held up as being that much more special," said Chuck Walton, managing editor of online movie-ticket site Fandango.com. "Oscar voters have a lot of respect for actors willing to really let themselves go and inhabit darker roles."

Warner Bros. and the filmmakers are profuse in their praise of Ledger but have been diplomatic about the Oscar talk. Awards publicity generally pads a movie's box-office and DVD receipts, and the studio has cautiously avoided any appearance of profiting from the added attention Ledger's death has brought to the film.

"The Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan sidestepped the Oscar question, saying that he was simply happy that early viewers were responding to the performance the way Ledger would have liked.

Christian BaleBatman Bale Says No To Robin
July 2, 2008

Batman star Christian Bale has declared he will quit the comic book movie franchise if producers ever decide to reintroduce the caped crusader's sidekick Robin.

Bale took on the role of the legendary action hero in 2005's Batman Begins and will be seen again in The Dark Knight, which is due for release later this month. However the actor is hoping that the character of Robin is not brought back into any of future Batman movies - because he will resign in protest.

He tells Hollywood Minute, "If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I'll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work."

EmmyTV Shows That Deserve An Emmy Nomination On July 17
July 2, 2008

As TV continues to evolve, so does the Emmy voting process. This year, The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences leaked the preliminary results of the voting for Best Comedy and Best Drama Series. In the coming weeks, a blue ribbon panel will narrow the top 10 down to the final five nominees. Their findings will be presented along with the rest of the nominees on the morning of July 17.

In the meantime, their top 10 lists are ripe for debate. Who among the chosen few deserves the honor of an actual nomination? I'm here to help the panel by offering an expert opinion honed over an entire season of television viewing, and not the three or four episodes of each series the selectors will use to make their final decisions.

The following is the way I would vote if I were on the panel.

EmmyBest Drama Contenders

"Boston Legal"
"Damages"
"Dexter"
"Friday Night Lights"
"Grey's Anatomy"
"House"
"Mad Men"
"The Tudors"
"Lost"
"The Wire"

Three choices in this category are absolute no-brainers. "The Wire" is the undisputed champ of TV drama, and despite a lackluster last season, it certainly deserves a nomination. Heck, if the last season would have just been ten episodes of Clay Davis uttering his favorite four-letter catchphrase, it would still deserve a nomination just for its preceding seasons' never being honored.

"Mad Men" brought sixties bad-boy cool back onto television in a delicious amalgam of debauchery, wit, and excellent writing. It should certainly earn a nomination for its maiden season.

EmmyThe easy three rounds out with "Lost", the best serialized television show of all time coming of its best season. It may be tough for the panelists to glean its true quality from a few standalone episodes, but the excitement and richness of the plot should be evident no matter what.

Now's the hard part - sifting through the muck to find two more diamonds. There's no clear standout among the remainders, so it's time to play the elimination game.

The inclusion of "The Tudors" is extremely curious. Its overwrought melodrama is far too cheesy for an Emmy nomination, or even the writer's room of a daytime soap. The same can be said for both "Damages" and "Grey's Anatomy." The former indulges in its frothy ludicrousness while the latter takes it all seriously. Either way, both are a bit too ridiculous for this category. A similar fate continued to threaten the once-brilliant "Friday Night Lights" this year as its murderous and drug-dealing plotlines saw it veer into "7th Heaven" territory. It did manage to keep its heading barely, however, and still deserves a make-up nod for its transcendent first season, so it squeaks in at the final gun.

That leaves three acting showcases to vie for the final spot. The first, "Boston Legal" has the weakest writing of the three, and splits its brilliance between two characters, so it's out, meaning "Dexter" and "House" are left to do battle.

Both series are pretty weak beyond their main characters. One-dimensionality and formulaic plotlines fester around them, threatening to ruin their series. In a tight race, "Dexter" gets the edge for the overall originality of its premise and the fact the show stayed good despite one of the worst performances (Jaime Murray's atrocious Lila) in the history of television.

EmmyBest Comedy Contenders

"Curb Your Enthusiasm"
"Entourage"
"Family Guy"
"Flight of the Conchords"
"The Office"
"Pushing Daisies"
"30 Rock"
"Two and a Half Men"
"Ugly Betty"
"Weeds"

Very slim pickins in the comedy category. It's pretty sad when comedy on television has sunk so low that "Family Guy" makes any sort of top ten list other than an award for most recycled "Simpsons" jokes in an episode.

Still, there are two easy choices. "Flight of the Conchords" brought surreal musical comedy to television in a way nobody's ever seen. The sublime nature of the comedy and the ease with which its leads pull it off certainly merits recognition.

The other easy choice is "30 Rock," which has with the end of "Extras" and the post-strike decline of "How I Met Your Mother" established itself as doubtlessly the best comedy on television. There were more laughs in its season finale than there are in an entire season of "'Til Death."

EmmyThose two are really the only two series that deserve to get nominated from this list as several more worthy competitors were passed over. But this isn't the list of Emmy snubs (stay tuned for those), so we must barrel forward and pick the three lesser of the seven remaining evils.

Let's start with the two most overrated series on television: "The Office" and "Ugly Betty". The first of these just wrapped its worst season to date, a decline it's been on since the first season ended, while "Betty" decided to get much, much worse. Apparently jokes about bad ponchos and fashion-related puns are the height of good comedy these days. "Ugly Betty" just isn't good by any stretch of the imagination, but "The Office" despite its shortcomings still manages to squeeze some laughs and pathos out of the gang at Dunder-Mifflin. It gets in.

My teeth still hurts from watching "Pushing Daisies." Way, way too sweet. Maybe if the Emmys were chocolate statues wrapped in gold foil.

"Two and a Half Men" was funny about five years ago, and then the writers decided to just replace the names of the guest characters in old scripts and pretend they were new episodes. At least that's the way it seems.

Emmy"Weeds" peaked in its second season and plummeted into a deep dark valley in its third from which it was never able to escape. Rather than stick with the dark suburban satire that made the show so great, the writers decided it best to make it a show solely about a drug-dealing mommy. Most of the fun and most of the humor went up in smoke with that decision.

This means two formerly great series get in by default. Well, not totally.

Season 6 of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" was its worst, but a bad season of "Curb" is still funnier than nearly anything else on TV. It should get a nomination and deserves it.

That cannot be said for "Entourage." Showing a decline in quality similar to "Weeds" as the writers chose to feature Ari's exploits as almost a series-within-a-series and turned Johnny Drama into a cartoon character. Still there were enough funny moments and memorable situations for this Hollywood comedy to deserve the final slot. Barely.

Make sure to check back in a few weeks when the nominations are announced to find out who got in, who got snubbed, and who doesn't deserve to be there.

Dennis HaysbertHaysbert: Prez Role On '24' May Have Helped Obama
July 2, 2008

Dennis Haysbert likes to believe his portrayal as the first African-American U.S. president on Fox's "24" may have helped pave the way for Barack Obama.

"If anything, my portrayal of David Palmer, I think, may have helped open the eyes of the American people," said the actor, who has contributed $2,300 to the Illinois Democrat's presidential campaign.

"And I mean the American people from across the board — from the poorest to the richest, every color and creed, every religious base — to prove the possibility there could be an African-American president, a female president, any type of president that puts the people first," he said Tuesday.

Haysbert, who now stars on "The Unit" on CBS, made his comments to reporters during a teleconference call promoting the upcoming American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe.

Haysbert, who also played Nelson Mandela in the 2007 film "Goodbye Bafana," said his role as President Palmer seemed to "confuse people" who would approach him on the street "every day, almost every hour, and ask me to run."

"I still, even after three seasons into 'The Unit' playing Sgt. Maj. Jonas Blaine, I'm still asked by people on the street to run," he said.

Haysbert, 54, said he recently stopped for dinner south of Los Angeles with his daughter in Dana Point, Calif., a town he described as "very wealthy, very white and very Republican."

"I go into this little restaurant with that demographic and a lady comes up to me and says, 'You know, I want to vote for you,'" he said. "I don't know if it is a joke or that people just like to say those things. But to me, for them to say it out loud means they are thinking about it."

July 2, 2008

Angelina Jolie's obstetrician is giving a news conference to talk about his famous patient and her eagerly awaited twins.

The seafront Lenval hospital in Nice, on the French Riviera, says Jolie has checked into its Santa Maria maternity clinic to be kept under doctors' watch and rest up before she gives birth.

The clinic has invited reporters to a news conference later Wednesday with Dr. Michel Sussmann.

A hospital spokeswoman has said that the births were "not for right away." But spokeswoman Nadine Bauer has said the actress will almost certainly stay in the clinic until then.

Jolie, her partner Brad Pitt and their four children have been settling into a new home about 60 miles from Nice.

Molly RingwaldMolly Ringwald: 'Teen Pregnancy Is Still A Problem'
July 2, 2008

Actress Molly Ringwald agreed to play the worried mom of an expectant teen in a new TV drama to remind America that unplanned pregnancies are still a huge problem. The flame-haired star played a teenage mom-to-be in 1988 film For Keeps and, now 40, she's tackling the subject matter again in The Secret Life of The American Teenager.

She hopes the new project will prompt young girls and their mothers to communicate with each other better - so a few unplanned pregnancies can be avoided.

She explains, "Not all that much has changed. If you look at the movies I did... I played a teen mom. There were drugs in The Breakfast Club. There's all that insecurity... All the same issues are still there. It's all about communication."
